HARBOR HOUSE FAMILY FESTIVAL

On July 18th and July 25th, 2015, Orlando Outreachers had “fun day” events designed to positively impact the shelter stays for survivors of domestic violence at the Harbor House of Central Florida. The goal was to increase socialization, stimulation, and physical activity for children during their summer break from school, as well as to provide an enjoyable experience for their mothers. Orlando Outreachers had approximately 50 volunteers at each event to ensure that the children of the Harbor House had the time of their lives, and that the mothers were supplied with a pleasant diversion which would take their minds off of their recent domestic situations.  Ultimately, the volunteers were able to bond and form lasting relationships with one another, and they experienced a connection with the residents they will never forget.

“We definitely just want to thank you guys. There is so much more that you can do together than you can do apart. To have someone on the inside like me, who knows exactly how it feels [to be abused], to say to you “you made me feel better,” you have no idea what that actually means to me. Events like this actually help with building confidence back. The counselors here [at the Harbor House] are great, but you get the same thing over and over again. When you wake up in the morning, it’s [the abuse] on your mind. With this event, you are smiling, laughing, running around, and you can take your mind off everything and just enjoy life.”
